Influence Critical Thinking through the Engineering Design Process
Saturday January 25, 2025 8:55am - 10:10am CST
Immerse yourself in an Engineering Challenge and become the engineer! To influence our students from "learning" about science to "doing" science, we must practice and challenge our own critical thinking skills. This session will demonstrate the power of hands-on learning and its implications on knowledge building through real-world phenomena. Participants will gain insight to the Engineering Design Process and develop their understanding of the Scientific and Engineering Practices (SEPs) by becoming the learner. By engaging in this process, students will not only sharpen their problem-solving abilities but also develop the skills necessary for successful careers in the engineering field, where innovation and critical thinking are key to tackling complex challenges.

What’s Up for 2025
Saturday January 25, 2025 10:20am - 11:35am CST
Explore all the upcoming events of 2025, focusing on observations our students in Houston can make. Events include the upcoming Total Lunar Eclipse in March, plus features of full moons and appearances of the planets. Demonstrations and a Discovery dome show reinforce observations students make and bring the universe into the classroom. Activities explain why we have days, months, and years. Events extend from observations of ancient civilizations to the latest discoveries of the new Space Telescope.

Building a Helping Hand
Saturday January 25, 2025 11:45am - 1:00pm CST
Teachers will engage in an engineering design project to effectively build a robotic hand. They will determine which household materials have physical properties that when combined, can accomplish everyday tasks such as writing, picking up a ball, or opening a door. Scientists, engineers, and doctors work together to develop artificial body parts called prosthetics to replacement limbs or organs for people due to accidents
or disease. This activity connects science and engineering as well as some artistic elements.
